Sledding
by S.S.F., 5th grade
“Let’s go, you people!” I hollered from the door. I went back outside and waited with Max and the sleds outside. I saw them rounding the corner.
“Fin-al-ly,” complained Max, “What took you so long? Jeeze!”
We walked two or three blocks until we came to the huge hill. We started the climb. Left, right, left, right. We were halfway up. “Uhh, can we take a break, ‘cause I’m about ready to stop and go down this hill,” I whined.
“Okay, we’ll stop for a second, you little pansy,” teased my Grandma Gigi. One minute passed, and we started up again.
“Hey, look! I can see the hill,” Mom said.
“Sam, you wanna play a game?” said Max.
“Sure, how do you play?”
“It’s like this. You take your sled and go down the hill. On your way down, you see who can knock the other guy off first.”
“Gigi, come over here. Can you tell us when to go?”
“Sure,” she said. “On your marks. Get set. Go!”
I nudged myself forward at the same time Max did. From the beginning, he tried to push me and grab me. I steered off the right, then I came back to see if I could knock him off. As quick as a flash of lightning, he grabbed my arm and flung me over his body. He started laughing hysterically. But I wasn’t laughing too hard, because I had face planted into the cold, white snow.
We walked back up the hill. This time, I was going to get my revenge.
“1, 2, 3….Go!” I said. I pushed myself to the right far away from Max. I waited to go down a little, and then I steered had to the left. I smashed head on into Max. He didn’t even flinch!
He just laughed, “Nice try!” as I flew backwards. Once again, I had lost, unfortunately.
I ran up again. This time I really wanted to win.
Max yelled, “Ready, set, go!” I pushed myself as hard as I could to get in front of Max. I did and I waited to pick up speed. Then I dug my feet into the snow.
Bam! Max slammed into me at full speed. I looked up and I saw a big, dark figure flying over me.
“AHHHHHHH!” Max yelled. I looked back to see where his sled was. And, boy, did I see it!
“Oh, CR…,” Ca-blue-ey! Lights out. I fell over into the white, fluffy snow.
“UHH, my head,” I wept.
“Come on. It can’t hurt that much,” said Max.
“Shut up!” I said.
I slowly sat up. I scanned my head with my hand. There was a huge bump on the front of my head. “Can we stay a little longer?” I asked.
“Ten more minutes,” replied Mom.
“Let’s just race from now on, ok?” commented Max. We got back on our sleds.
“1, 2, 3, go!” yelled Mom. We started down the hell. Then Mom let Rowdy off the leash. He chased us down the hill. I was in first, Max was second and Rowdy was bringing up the rear. We were half way down the hill. Max sped up, and was next to me. It was too close to call. I inched ahead of Max at the last second.
“Yes,” I yelled. “I won!” Rowdy was still raging forward. Then he jumped. “Max, watch out,” I screamed, but it was too late. Rowdy tackled Max into the snow.
I looked at Max, who was getting trampled. I broke out laughing.
Then my mom whistled two little chirps. “Max, Sam, Rowdy! We’re going.” We walked back to my grandma’s house.
“Hey, Max! I bet I can finish my hot chocolate before you!”
