Volunteers Needed for the Steele Garden 2014 Season

For many families, the garden program at Steele is a huge attraction to the school. We’ve been lucky to have been given a successful program for cultivating crops with our students for so many years, but now it’s time for current parents to take over the reins.  It’s up to us as parents to continue all we love about the garden grow our community alongside our garden.

There are many opportunities to volunteer in the garden.   If you would like a broader perspective of our program, in addition to the links at the top of the page, you can also contact us directly at SteeleGarden@gmail.com.

Current Volunteer Opportunities:

Planting Helpers - Assist with planting activies arranged and scheduled with classes throughout the year.  You may be asked to lead discussion and demonstration on how to plant seeds; assist children with planting seeds, transplanting and garden planting; and manage the maintenance of plants through the initial growing season. Gardening experience is a plus, but not required.   Must be available during school hours from March through May, this is an opportunity to learn more about a very important part of our garden program and work directly with our children.  Please Contact Mary Guisinger or the Steele Garden with any questions and to let us know you are interested.

Youth Farmers Market Helpers - Join the YFM team on Friday afternoons this fall to work with the 5th graders to harvest, package, market and sell fresh produce after school.  This important fundraiser for the Steele School Garden focuses on sharing the produce from the garden with families in our community.  Markets will be held 9/5, 9/12, 9/19, 9/26 (special Apple Sale), 10/3 and 10/10.  We ask for 2.5 hours of time from 1:30 – 4:00 and we reward you with many smiles, increased knowledge of the garden program and new friends.  Come join our team.  If interested, you can sign up on Volunteers Spot or please contact Andra Homens or the Steele Garden with any questions and to let us know you are interested.
