Dear Steele Families,

You likely have heard about the contract negotiations between our district and the Denver Classroom Teacher Association (DCTA) to reach a ProComp Agreement. This agreement covers how our district spends the roughly $33 million it receives each year from the dedicated ProComp mill levy. This money must be spent according to the terms of the mill levy voters approved in 2005. It covers incentive pay for teachers, like those in hard to staff positions like Special Education and Secondary Math and Science, for example.

Our district has established a website at greatteachers.dpsk12.org where teachers, parents and community members can find the latest information on the negotiation process. Included on this website are upcoming negotiation sessions listed here:

  • Bargaining Session 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday, Jan. 11, Acoma Campus, 1617 S. Acoma St., Denver, CO 80223.
  • Bargaining Session 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 15, Acoma Campus, 1617 S. Acoma St., Denver, CO 80223.
  • Bargaining Session 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 17, Acoma Campus, 1617 S. Acoma St., Denver, CO 80223.
  • Bargaining Session 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Friday, Jan. 18, Acoma Campus, 1617 S. Acoma St., Denver, CO 80223.

If an agreement is not reached by January 18, the Denver Classroom Teacher Association has scheduled a strike vote with its members on January 19. If DCTA conducts a strike vote, our district will be requesting the state intervene immediately. If the state intervenes, the strike will be on hold because it is against the law to strike while the state is working to resolve the issues. Under state law, the intervention can last up to 180 days.

Our hope is an agreement is reached by the January 18 deadline. Our district staff is preparing a strong contingency plan so that schools remain open should a strike occur.
