I wanted to let everyone know that we had a lock-down drill last Friday morning. A lock-down drill is when our students and staff practice what to do if we had an intruder intent on doing harm in the building. Unfortunately, in the last 5-10 years these drills have had to become a common occurrence in public schools. We made sure that students were emotionally prepared by explaining the procedure of the drill beforehand and allowing them to ask any questions they may have about the drill.
Whenever we have a lock-down drill, I am invariably asked what is the best way to keep students safe. I truly believe that having an open and caring community that gets to know one another and reports suspicious activities quickly to me (or the office) is the best way to keep our students safe. Getting to know one another and helping one another through challenging situations is the best way for us to grow.
I wish we didn’t live in a world where we had to practice how to stay safe. However, I am grateful to work in a community where we look at the education and safety of our children as a collective effort.
